Since Monday morning, the Progressive Potato Trader's Committee has initiated a strike, halting the removal of potatoes from icehouses across the state. Traders have warned that the supply of potatoes in the market will significantly decrease, as the potatoes taken out on Saturday are nearly depleted. This disruption is expected to result in a noticeable shortage in most markets starting Monday. Typically, the state requires 15,000 to 20,000 metric tons of potatoes daily, but the strike is poised to impact availability.

In Kolkata markets on Monday, the prices of Jyoti potatoes ranged from Rs 34 to Rs 35 per kilogram, while Chandramukhi potatoes sold for Rs 38 to Rs 40 per kilogram. The strike was prompted by potato traders suffering losses due to government measures aimed at controlling rising potato prices. Despite repeated appeals to the government for relief, the businessmen's concerns were not addressed, leading to the decision by the Progressive Potato Trader's Association to strike.
